Westwood District - Patches

jump to  >  1960's    Great Western Era

Westwood was one of the oldest districts in Crescent Bay Council dating back to the mid 1930's. The boundaries encompassed Westwood, Westwood Hills, West Los Angeles, Brentwood, Cheviot Hills, Rancho Park and surrounding areas. In 1957 the District was divided in two, the western half becoming Golden Trails District and the eastern half becoming Westwood Hills District and then simply Westwood District. Little is known about Westwood activities and events of the 1930's-40's. A joint event was held with the Girl Scouts at their new campsite in the Santa Monica Mountains off Mulholland Drive just west of the old Sepulveda tunnel on april 21, 1940. The first District camporee was held jointly with Santa Monica District on May 10-11, 1941, at U.C.L.A. in preparation for the Crescent Bay Camp-o-Ral.  Another camporee was held December 8-9, 1945 at Camp Josepho.  District Scout-O-Ramas and Swim meets were also held beginning in the mid 1940's.
During most years, a camporee was held in the Spring and another in the Fall while various events were held at other times.
Westwood also participated in four "Council-Wide" camporees in 1946, 1953, 1960, & 1971.
NOTE: The majority of dates and locations for Westwood events have been reconstructed through detailed analysis of the Crescent Bay Council calendars published each month in the "Round-Up" council newsletter and the Crescent Bay Area Council news clipping scrapbook. In some cases, information listed in the calendars and scrapbook is missing or incomplete.

This segment was worn over the generic patch shown at right.

Generic patches
were available to councils through the the National B.S.A. Supply Division and other patch companies. They were often

used to save money or when there
was not enough lead-time to have
a unique design made.
Many versions of this generic patch exist.
The patch used by Westwood is embroidered
on twill with red lettering & Indian.

    IDENTIFICATION GUIDE

How the Silk Screening Process Creates Varieties

When silk screens are cut, the printer prepares two side-by-side images. This allows the patches to be screened two at
a time instead of individually.
The process is called TWO UP. Often times, this will create minor differences between the patches
screened on the right versus the left.

1953

The 1953 Temescal patch is known to come in two major types that are easily distinguished by
the shape of the pirate's shoulder on the right and different varieties within those types.

TYPE 1
Right Shoulder Ends in Two Points

    TYPE 1 A

  TYPE 1 B

TYPE A: the right shoulder ends in TWO POINTS. Flocking is MEDIUM TO THIN.

TYPE B:
the right shoulder ends in TWO POINTS. Flocking is THICK.

TYPE 2
Right Shoulder Ends in One Point

    TYPE 2 A

  TYPE 2 B

TYPE C: the right shoulder ends in ONE POINT. Flocking is MEDIUM TO THIN.

TYPE D: the right shoulder ends in ONE POINT. Flocking is THICK.
