Will Rogers District - Patches

jump to  >  patches NOT from Will Rogers District in Crescent Bay Council

Will Rogers District was created in June 1956, when Santa Monica Bay District  was divided in two. The district boundaries encompassed Pacific Palisades, Topanga, Fernwood, Malibu and the western portion of Crescent Bay Council all the way to the Ventura County line. A contest was held to name the new district. Five scouts combined to submit the name of famous humorist and movie star Will Rogers, who owned land and a home in the Santa Monica Mountains within the district boundaries. (see Will Rogers & Camp Josepho).
During most years, camping events were held in the spring and fall. Circle B Scout Ranch was used for camporees and Wilderness Camps were held in more remote mountain locations. Will Rogers District also participated in two "Council-Wide" camporees in 1960, & 1971.
NOTE: The majority of dates and locations for Will Rogers events have been reconstructed through detailed analysis of the Crescent Bay Council calendars published each month in the "Round-Up" council newsletter and the Crescent Bay Area Council news clipping scrapbook. In some cases, information listed in the calendars and scrapbook is missing or incomplete.

It is likely the first Will Rogers patch was issued to represent the new district and not for a particular event. It was meant to be worn with segments including the district's first Wilderness camp out.

A new version of the District patch with different colors was issued for 1957 although there is currently no record of the Will Rogers camporees or activities during that year. Changing patch colors annually started a tradition that lasted through 1971.

    How Segments were Worn

The original Will Rogers District patches were used with Wilderness segments. Good Camper segments from Camp Emerald Bay were also worn around
the district patch as seen
in this 1956 Will Rogers District patch removed
from a scout shirt.
