Venice District - Leather Awards

Crescent Bay events prior to 1940 are the least documented and least understood area of the Council's history and that certainly holds true for the Districts. By the early 1930's, Crescent Bay was holding different scouting competitions that pitted troops and patrols against each other. Hand-made leather awards were presented to winning troops and patrols. Venice District followed the Council's lead with similar events of its own. The leather awards precede patches and are among the earliest insignia known from Crescent Bay Area Council. Scrap leather was readily available and commonly used during the 1930's because leather insignia and ribbons could be made in small numbers at nominal cost.
The Venice District awards are typically hand-made with black ink on scrap leather.

NOTE: The Venice Scouters Association existed briefly between 1931 through early 1934. The group was organized by Venice Scouters in response to the merging of Venice District with Santa Monica District (forming Bay District) in 1931. Their efforts were successful in separating the two districts again in early 1934. This leather award is currently the only known insignia that says "Venice Scouters Association".

It is believed that Venice District held Pow Wows every year into the 1950's. Leather awards and banners were probably used annually thoughout the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's although only a few exist today. In 1938, 1942 and likely other years, leather patches were made for Pow Wow competition winners that could be worn on the merit badge sash. A patch was issued for the Pow Wow in 1947 and segments were made to recognize winners in the various events.
