Tamet Tokala

Camp Josepho


          In 1966, the members of Tamet Lodge embarked on a new three-day event that expanded on the previous Tamet Pow-Wow's of the early 1960's. The Tokala was patterned loosely around the Canalino Lodge no. 90 Sun Dance fellowship in Santa Barbara. The program emphasized Indian lore, costuming and dancing. Arrowmen from all of California were invited.
          Also included were competitions, trophies, awards, patch trading, swimming, archery, campfire and an Indian Pow-Wow Pageant. The event was well attended and Tamet Lodge repeated the Tokala each year thereafter (excepting 1969) until it merged with Walika Lodge in 1972. However, 1966 was only three-day Tokala. In subsequent years, the event returned to a one day format, similar in many ways to the "Final Ordeal" meeting in 1951.

Acorn Festival  
January 18, 1969
Camp Josepho

 
          The Acorn Festival was a co-ed event that replaced the annual Tokala in 1969. The program included: Ritual clinics,  archery & rifle competition, Indian games,volleyball tournament, dinner and a campfire. Tamet Lodge returned to the Tokala in 1971-72.

Work Party
February 8 & 15,1969
Camps Josepho & Slauson


       In the two weeks following the Acorn Festival, the
Los Angeles area was pounded by storms. Flooding and erosion caused severe  damage at Camps Josepho and Slauson. Work parties were quickly organized to make improvements at both camps.

          By 1970, the Tamet Tokala was no longer a weekend event, instead being a full Saturday at Camp Josepho that culminated with a banquet in the Camp Josepho lodge. Few, if any members, stayed in camp overnight.
