In order to facilitate the over-bordering process, the manufacturer removed a section of the light blue borders on the lower right side. When these patches
had their yellow over-border removed, there was a blank area in the light blue border that was sometimes sewn in by hand as in the example above.

Prototype

1965

The prototype flap has several differences from the patches issued to members, most notably: the stitching direction of the sky and water is vertical instead of horizontal. A very light blue is used for the sky, water and streams. There is black outline around the snow capped mountains and no black border  to the hills of Catalina Island. Finally, the "W's" are different  sizes, with the two outer W's being smaller than the "W" on the sun.
Blue Book Cat. No. 225 YS1

Fakes

It is said that some unscrupulous collectors from outside of Tamet Lodge removed the borders from an unknown number of yellow border flaps for the purpose of re-bordering them with purple and white. Unbeknown to them at the time, the flaps they chose to alter had light brown tepees, which were issued 1965-67, at least three years before the real purple and white bordered flaps were made.
