Marina District - Patches

jump to Marina District patches from  >   1969-70's    Great Western Council Era

In the Fall of 1957, Venice District changed its name to Marina District to be more representative of the growing number of scouting units located within its boundaries but outside of the community of Venice. Other than changing the name, Marina District maintained the same boundaries as the old Venice District which served scout units in the coastal communities south of Santa Monica including the towns of Venice, Westchester, Playa Del Rey and parts of Mar Vista. The Marina name was chosen prior to the completion of Marina Del Rey and Los Angeles International Airport, both of which would soon be located within the District boundaries.  Annual events included Expositions, Wilderness Camps, camporees and participation in two "Council-Wide" camporees in 1960, & 1971.
NOTE: Additional dates and locations for Marina events have been reconstructed through detailed analysis of the Crescent Bay Council calendars published each month in the "Round-Up" council newsletter and the Crescent Bay Area Council news clipping scrapbook. In some cases, information listed in the calendars and scrapbook is missing or incomplete.

Marina (Venice) District Scout-O-Ramas date back to 1945. They were the last district to hold Scout-O-Ramas after Crescent Bay started the Council
Scout-O-Ramas in 1954.
  Embroidered on no-twill.
In 1960, Marina finally changed the name
of their event from Scout-O-Rama to Scout Exposition so as not to be in competition
with the Crescent Bay Scout-O-Rams.

Generic patches were available to councils through the the National B.S.A. Supply Division and other patch companies.
They were often used to save money or when there was not enough lead-time to have a unique design made.

The exact purpose of the mid 1970's activities patch is unknown although there is some speculation that the patch celebrated the 40TH ANNIVERSARY of the founding of Venice District in 1934. This version has a cut edge and lettering of red & white.   It is possible that the activities patch
was used as an award or simply to
be an emblem for the district.
This version has a solid red
rolled edge and lettering.
