About Swimming Meets

Crescent Bay Council Swimming Meets were popular events beginning in the late 1920's and then held annually over many decades. Most often, the Swim Meets were held at other events like the Pow Wow, Camp-O-Ral, or Scout-O-Rama although in the early years, they began as stand-alone events. Swimming competitions were held in all water venues including Crescent Bay beaches, Camp Emerald Bay, the pool at Camp Josepho during the early 1940's, Beverley Hills High School into the 1950's and then at Santa Monica College in later years. Districts also held their own Swimming Meets including Venice, Westwood & Beverly Hills Districts and possibly others. Early on, winners were awarded medals while troops and patrols received ribbons. By the 1940's, ribbons were also awarded to the scouts that won the events.

Individual competitions included ocean swims, Life Saving and the Mile Swim, an event originally developed by the
American Red Cross before the Boy Scouts adopted its own version of the award after World War II.

Swims  from the breakwater may have started in the 1920's.   Anodized Copper, Hallmarked on back. The Mile swim was originally created by the American Red Cross (A.R.C.) as part of their Life Saving Service (L.S.S.) program.

Crescent Bay Council used the A.R.C. L.S.S. as a fundamental part of it's program at Camp Emerald Bay in the 1920's and 30's.

NOTE: These early 1930's medals were manufactured by well known jewelry and trophy companies from Los Angeles
including the Dodge Co. who made the Academy Awards Oscars as well as the Emmy's beginning in 1949.

Leather Patches & Ribbons of the 1930's

In the decade of the Great Depression, spending money on professionally manufactured patches and awards was a luxury.
Hand drawn items on scrap leather could be made in very small quantities for almost no cost.

1940's-1950's District Swimming Meets

Some of the Crescent Bay Districts held their own swimming meets, most notably Westwood and Beverly Hills. Both Beverly Hills and Westwood held their own joint Scout-O-Rama beginning in 1946 and their Swimming Meets may have been part of the weekend event.
