Notes on Nomenclature: The names and spellings of Crescent Bay events from the late 1930's through 1953 are confusing at best. What started out as Council Camporals became Council Camporees in the late 1930's to distinguish themselves from Regional Camporals held by Region 12 in both Northern and Southern California. Only competition winners from the Crescent Bay Camporals/Camporees were invited to the Regional Camporals. "Camporal" can be seen spelled as a single word or spaced as "Camp O Ral" or even hyphenated as "Camp-O-Ral". To make matters more confusing, different versions can be seen used interchangeably at the same event. Around 1941, Crescent Bay changed the name of its main event back to Camporal (even though Region 12 was also still using the name Camporal) because it began using Camporee for district events that were used as qualifying events for the Council's Camporal. If all that seems incomprehensible, it probably seemed equally incomprehensible to the Scouts at the time. |

Evening Outlook Article By Alden Barber June 6 ![]() When Camp Josepho officially opened on June 7, 1941, the combined Camporal & Dedication was not the first event held at the new camp but certainly the largest. (see > Josepho History 1941). Concern over the narrow road, number of parked cars and participant support facilities led Council officials to devise a District Camporee plan to limit the number of Camporal participants. Scouts competed at the District Camporees and only the top 80 patrols, as determined by competition at the District Camporees, were invited to attend the Camporal. With the dedication and Camporal completed, the first 7-day session of summer camp began on July 5, 1941. Camp Josepho has been hopin' ever since. see > 1941 Camporee photos

A Crescent Bay Camporal was scheduled
again in 1951 at the Douglas White Oak Ranch owned by airplane manufacturer Donald Douglas Sr.
Also known as Camp Douglas, the ranch was remotely located and hard to get to in 1951 prior to the building of the Ventura and Simi Valley freeways.
The association of the Douglas family and the Crescent Bay Scouts can be traced back to 1924. Douglas used the scouts to guard his Round-the-World flyer planes when they returned to Clover Field at the end of their famous flight. Use of the Douglas Ranch for the Camporal at the Douglas Ranch marked a stepped-up involvement for Donald Douglas Jr. with the Council. He would soon become Scout-O-Rama chairman in 1954 & 1955, followed by Crescent Bay Council President from 1956-1966.
No patches, ribbons, streamers or other memorabilia from the 1951 Camporal are currently known. |
