Beginning of Crescent Bay Council Camp Staff Jackets

The first Emerald Bay staff jackets date to 1948 or 1949 when Senior Air Scout jackets were embroidered "MANTA" on the back. They were given to Staff members that operated Crescent Bay Council's ship the MANTA, shuttling supplies and Scouts from Santa Monica Pier to Camp Emerald Bay. These jackets started the tradition of staff jackets at all of the Crescent Bay camps including Wolverton, Josepho and Slauson.
Special status was afforded to staff men wearing  their jackets at Crescent Bay Council events including Scout-O-Rama and Tamet Lodge Order of the Arrow banquets.

Late 1940's - Early 1950's

The Senior Air Scout jackets used for the first Emerald Bay staff jackets are thought to have been unused surplus at Crescent Bay headquarters. They are of the "Ike" style of jacket made famous during World War II by General Dwight Eisenhower and were incorporated as an accessory to adult Scout uniforms after the war through the early 1950's. Light Blue Air Scout Ike jackets are extremely rare in their own right and are an unexpected part of the Emerald Bay staff jacket tradition and story.

Great Western Council Era 1973-1984

Following the merger of Crescent Bay Area and San Fernando Valley Councils in 1972, Camp Emerald Bay opened for summer camping in 1973 without significant change from previous years. The new patch design stayed with the original "Crazy Pirate" mascot from the 1940's for the first three years. While the Camp had always been available to scouts from the San Fernando Valley, the merger only served to create more interest in Emerald Bay as a troop summertime destination.
