  Western Los Angeles County Council Era

  Great Western Council changed its name to Western Los Angeles County Council in 1985. Once again,
Camp Emerald Bay opened for summer camping in 1985 without significant change from previous years.

Pirate is an adaptation of the "Red Bandana Pirate" first used in the early 1980's
but now with arms and a body. This version of the Emerald Bay mascot, used
only one year, would transition into the "Crossed Arms Pirate" in 1988.

Staff Neckerchief Patch


Fully computer stitched on Felt. This staff pirate is very similar to the staff pirate from
1982-84 with a SOLID BLACK eye patch.

  YELLOW rolled edge.
1986 design returns to the Red Hat staff pirate first used in 1961 on neckerchiefs and in 1976-77 on camper patches.
   


 
Mid-Late 1980's Segments

In the mid 1980's, Camp Emerald Bay expanded its award system and began issuing segments for a wide variety
of activities and events. Good Camper & Camper awards remained although it appears that segments were no longer
available for Campers. Activity & award segments of the mid-late 1980's are SWISS EMBROIDERED with PLASTIC BACKS.
Camp Emerald Bay segments were generally used over a wide range of years until they ran out and were reordered.

Special 2 mile run around camp that was renamed "Buffalo Run" around 2000.

 
  Week long camp activity
promoting leadership and the "patrol method" in camp.

  
  Similar to Good Camper strips from the late 1970's with
PLASTIC BACK.

  Honor Unit award designed 
as a comprehensive test of
a troop's program in camp.

 


 Rugged E    Sea Lion
 Silver Peak   Honor Troop
     
 
Standing for "Rugged Explorer", this was the first patch ever
made for Rugged E, which also awarded special neckerchiefs.
  .Swimming four lengths of
the swim area on three
different days.
 
  Awarded for hiking Silver Peak, elevation 1,804' , 3rd highest point on Catalina Island.
 
  Honor Troop Award believed to be an early version of the Honor Unit Award in the mid 1980's.

Staff Pirate Neckerchief Patch


Return to the original staff pirate mascot
for the first time since 1978. SWISS embroidered on WHITE FELT.
Used for 1987 only although same
version of the staff pirate WITHOUT
WHITE FELT was used in 1989.

This year's patch introduced the "Crossed Arms" pirate which has become the
most popular version of the Emerald Bay mascot since the original "Crazy Pirate".

This version of the original staff pirate was used for one year only and was the first of the staff pirates NOT embroidered on felt.

Early 1990's Segments

Activity & award segments of the early 1990's are COMPUTER STITCHED with a WIDE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL around the border.
Camp Emerald Bay segments were generally used over a wide range of years until they ran out and were reordered.
It is not known if this style of segment was made for all of the activities and events offered at camp.

    Special 2 mile run around camp that was renamed "Buffalo Run" around 2000.
  This might be the last time a Good Camper patch was offered at Emerald Bay, ending a tradition dating back to 1929.   Swimming four lengths of
