Great Western Council Era 1973-1984

Following the merger of Crescent Bay Area and San Fernando Valley Councils in 1972, Camp Emerald Bay opened for summer camping in 1973 without significant change from previous years. The new patch design stayed with the original "Crazy Pirate" mascot from the 1940's for the first three years. While the Camp had always been available to scouts from the San Fernando Valley, the merger only served to create more interest in Emerald Bay as a troop summertime destination.

Good Camper-Above

The yellow bordered on white
twill segments worn above the patch are less common than the segments designed for below.

Honor camper segments like the one shown above have been associated with Camp Emerald Bay during the 1970's. These segments were stock items available to scout camps around the country since the 1950's. Many varieties exist. Also comes reversed to be worn above the camp patch.

1974-78 Segments

Yellow and red segments on white material, designed for wear BELOW the patch, were used for many years during the 1970's.
Extra supplies of these segments were also used during the 1980's when supplies of other color segments were not available.

While the "Camper" award continued to be used into the 1980's, it appears that
"Camper" segments were discontinued sometime in the late 1970's.

A new design was used to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary
of Camp Emerald Bay, Unfortunately,
1976 was the 51st anniversary of the
camp and the 52nd summer of Crescent
Bay camping on Catalina Island.  Oops!
1976-78 patch featured a red-hat pirate mascot that had been used for staff neckerchief patches since 1961. This pirate was the first modification to the original "Crazy Pirate" used since 1947.

Staff Pirate Patches

The first of what are today known as "Staff Pirates", were sewn to black neckerchiefs. This mascot has been proudly worn by
Camp Emerald Bay Staff for over fifty years and may be the longest standing symbol for any Camp Staff in the United States.
