The tradition of camp T-shirts at Emerald Bay, started at Camp Josepho in 1943, has carried on through the present.
After 40 continuous years of white camper and staff T-shirts, Camper shirts were boldly made in non-white colors beginning in 1987.
(Many Thanks to John Wilson for his help with the Emerald Bay T-shirt Collection.)

In 1990, another departure from tradition was tried, experimenting with different colored T-shirts for campers. The exact purpose of the different colors remains unclear. Staff T-shirts for 1990 were still in traditional white with the camp patch logo. However, the camper shirts used a new scenic design with a pirate reminiscent of Yosemite Sam in a Bugs Bunny cartoon called Buccaneer Bunny, released by Warner Bros. Studios in 1948. Original drawings of the cartoon created in 1947 are also thought to be the inspiration, if not the actual drawings, for Camp Emerald Bay's first mascot: the Crazy Pirate.
