jump to ribbons from  >    1946    1947    1950's

Swimming Meets were a major annual Beverly Hills District event dating back to the early 1940's. Competition included the full array of traditional swimming events broken into divisions, most likely Senior, Junior and Cub. Most of the Swim Meets were held at Beverly Hills High School, known for having one of the best High School swimming pools in the country. The Beverly Hills High School "Swim Gym" was designed by Stiles O. Clements and built in 1939 as a New Deal project. The floor of the gym's basketball court opens to reveal a 25-yard (23 m)-long swimming pool underneath and is featured in the classic 1946 film It's A Wonderful Life, directed by Frank Capra and starring James Stewart. Stewart resided in Beverly Hills and was a strong supporter of scouting, having been awarded the Silver Buffalo.
Prior to the introduction of Crescent Bay Council Scout-O-Ramas in 1954, many of the Beverly Hills Swim Meets were held in conjunction with the Beverly Hills District Scout-O-Ramas.
